THE EVIL OF HALLOWEEN
by Kathy Pegram

I know a lot of people love Halloween. I am not one of them. I love Fall, pumpkins, scarecrows, the Fall colors and the crisp Fall air. I love seeing kids in their costumes when they knock on our door. Yes, even though I don't like Halloween I do love seeing the small kids in their costumes. Of course none are cuter than my grandbabies! LOL

I just wish the church world would stress more the importance of seperating ourselves from the evilness of Halloween. It has associations with death and paganism. It emphasizes dark characters from mythology, such as witches, vampires, and zombies, who are associated with death, Satanism, or the occult. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says; “There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.”

Christians are walking a very fine line when they embrace the evilness of Halloween. It reprensents so much of what God finds destestable. God is light and good! There is nothing light about Halloween - it is scary, spooky and dark. I honestly had all this come into my mind driving the girls to school this morning. Finleigh told me Oaklyn doesn't like Halloween. Oaklyn spoke up and said, "It's spooky and scary." She's two and even her spirit picks up on the dark side of it all. But, what really got me was when Finleigh said, "She thinks witches are real." I didn't repond, she is only five, so I didn't want to tell her they are real. We've had them show up at our revivals with their satanic bibles, cast spells in the parking lot while we were in church and before church, threaten us, etc. Yes, witches are real, my sweet, innocent, Finleigh, but you don't need to know that at your young age!

As if that conversation wasn't enough, I then stopped by the library to pick up a book. As I walked in all I kept seeing were witchcraft books, magic books, etc. My spirit felt so grieved as I thought about how satan slowly has indoctornated people into believing Halloween is innocent fun.

Although dressing up in a costume and handing out candy on October 31 is not a sin, you need to remember that you represent Christ on a very evil night. How you portray Jesus in your behavior, how you interact with people, and even your costume choices on that night, are an important reflection of your walk with God.

“Walk as children of light . . . and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8, 10)
