1 John 2: 20, “But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things”.
If I took a survey across the land of Bible believing Christians, concerning what they thought was the secret to Jesus’ power on earth, what do you think they would say? I think they would say the exact same thing I have already heard multitudes of Christians say. And that is, that He did what He did because He was the Son of God. And I will agree with that to a certain point. But then I will have to say emphatically no. I don’t believe He did what He did just because He was the Son of God. I believe there was something else.
If you’ll read what He had to say about it, and what the Gospel writers had to say about it, you’ll find out that there were two things that played an important role in it. First, do the will of God. Do exactly what God says to do. Go exactly where God says to go. Say exactly what God says to say. Do the will of God! How do I know that was a key thing in Jesus doing what He did on this earth? Because six times in the Book of Matthew alone, the Word says that Jesus did what He did to fulfill the Word and the purposes of His Father God.
Secondly, the other thing that played an important part in Jesus’ ministry is found in John 3:34, when it says, “for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” In other words, God gave Jesus an unlimited amount of the Spirit. It was so much that you couldn’t measure it! Glory! But that’s not all. In Luke 4:1 it says that Jesus was full of the Spirit when He went into the wilderness. But thirteen verses later in Luke 4:14, it says that “Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit”. Then, I think Acts 10:38 sums up the second factor of Jesus’ ministry really well, when it says, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power”.
Do you see what I am trying to show you? The reason Jesus could perform the miracles and mighty acts He did was not just simply because He was the Son of God. If so, then why didn’t He heal the blind when He was six years old? Why didn’t He make the lame to walk when He was twelve? Why didn’t He raise the dead when He was twenty-one? Simple, the Holy Ghost had not yet rested on Him! The reason He did what He did was because number one, the Holy Ghost anointed Him and secondly, He did exactly what God told Him to do. And the combination of these two things, along with Him being the Son of God, caused Him to do great things among the people.
What does all this mean to you and me though? Well, a lot when you take into consideration the statement I am about to write here right before your eyes. Are you ready to read this? The same Spirit and the same anointing that rested on Jesus for approximately three and one-half years is the exact anointing that God has now afforded unto us as Spirit-filled believers!!!
You may ask yourself right now how I can say such a thing. Well, I am going to prove it to you from two different scriptures. First, Acts 1:8 says that “you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” The word for power here is the Greek word “dunamis”. Now watch this. In Mark 5, when Jesus healed the woman with the issue of blood when she touched the hem of His garment, He turned around in verse 30 and said, “Who touched me?” You know why He said that? Because He perceived that virtue had gone out from Him! Virtue is an English word. The Greek word for it is “dunamis”! He was saying, “Dunamis, or power, has just went out of me!” Now, anybody with common sense can read that and put two and two together and know that the power that was healing people was called dunamis. And then Jesus turns to His disciples in Acts 1:8 and declares that “ye shall receive power, or “dunamis”, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you”! That my friend is the exact same anointing!
Now, let’s go back to our verse of scripture that we used as a text for this message, 1 John 2:20, where it says, “ye have an unction from the Holy One”. The Greek word for unction is “charisma”. It means something that is smeared on or rubbed in, thicker than the anointing oil of the Old Testament. In case you didn’t know it, the priests were anointed in symbolic form, but we are anointed in literal ways. 1 John 2:27 says, “the anointing which you have received of Him abideth in you." Our anointing is in us! Praise His holy name!
If you will remember though, the title to this message you are reading is called “Have You Received The Messiah’s Anointing?” Well, up to this point, I have showed you that the same anointing that dwelt upon Jesus can also be upon you. But I now want to show you where the Word says that if you are baptized in the Holy Ghost you do have the same anointing!
So far in this message, I have shown to you what both 1John 2:20 and 1 John 2:27 says about the anointing in the King James Version of the Bible. I now want to let you read for yourself what these same verses say in the Jewish New Testament, the Bible that Messianic Jews use.
1 Yochanan (1 John) 2:20, “But you have received the Messiah’s anointing from HaKadosh (the Holy Spirit), and you know all this.”
1 Yochanan (1 John) 2:27, “As for you, the Messianic anointing you received from the Father remains in you, so that you have no need for anyone to teach you. On the contrary, as his Messianic anointing continues to teach you about all things, and is true, not a counterfeit, so, just as he taught you, remain united with him.”
I don’t know how you responded when you just read that, but when I first read it, it made me shouting happy! Oh, I knew that the baptism of the Holy Ghost wasn’t just for speaking in tongues, but up until I read this, I had no idea of its significance! I thank God that He not only baptized us with His blessed Spirit, but He cared enough about us to give us unlimited power, without measure; the Messiahs Anointing!
Why else do you think that Jesus said in John 14:12, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do”? Because we have been given the Messiahs Anointing!
