THE POWER OF AGREEMENT

Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. ‘Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.’” (Matthew 18:18-20 KJV)

Yes! I tell you people that whatever you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. To repeat, I tell you that if two of you here on earth agree about anything people ask, it will be for them from my Father in heaven. For wherever two or three are assembled in my name, I am there with them.” (Matthew 18:18-20 JNT)

The word “agree” here is the Greek word sumphoneo, which means “to sound together; to be in accord like musical instruments with persons concerning a matter.”

Have you ever listened to anyone sing, or play musical instruments together that were out of tune? I have–way too many times! It sounds like a bunch of cats screeching in garbage bins. If we are to accomplish what Matthew 18 tells us that we can accomplish, we must be in agreement with those around us. We must not all be playing a different instrument, in a different chord, with a different beat. We must learn to sound together like beautiful instruments making melodious music. This is the meaning of agreement here.

We see from this, the kind of kingdom dominion power that is readily available for us from heaven, when we agree together. No wonder the devil tries so hard to bring strife, contentions, murmuring, backbiting, whispering, and jealousy into the Church. If he can get us to turn on one another, he knows the laws of heaven in these verses cannot be carried out, thus leaving a powerless Church. On the other hand though, if the Church can rise above those petty things and bind together in unity, there is no limit to what we can possess for the Kingdom of God.

The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 133:1, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. It is like the precious ointment upon the head that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard, that went down to the skirts of his garments.” God is showing us that unity and the anointing go hand in hand. And, when you have both unity and the anointing, that's when great things can be accomplished for the Kingdom of God. That is what the devil doesn't want us to know. Why? Why would he try to keep us in such disunity? Why would he try to block us from coming into agreement? Allow me to show you what happens when people come together.

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4 NKJV)

Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:44-47 NKJV)

So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4: 24, 31-33 NKJV)

And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch.” (Acts 5:12 NKJV)

Those are not my words. Those are the words of Almighty God. He shows us what can happen when a group of believers unite together in one accord. There is power in agreement. But did you know that you don't have to have a whole group? Did you know that it only takes two people? In Deuteronomy 32:30, it says that one can chase 1000, but two can put 10,000 to flight. Do you know what that means? That means that three can take on 100,000. That means that four can take on a million. Do you get my point?

Look at what Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NLT) says to us. “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” The KJV says verse 12 this way, “a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

I want you to think about something. Why, after just talking about the power of two, did God just throw in there something about a threefold cord not easily being broken? Because when two of us on earth agree touching anyone thing, God promised that He would be there too! And 2 + 1 = 3! When Jesus is with us, we can put a multitude to flight. When Jesus is with us, that extra third cord, braided together with two believers, becomes stronger exponentially more than you could even imagine. We have power over all the power of the enemy when Jesus is with us in agreement! And with King Jesus in agreement with us here on earth, we can and will have both victory and dominion.
