Revelation 4: 1-5, “After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God."
Before we can understand what I mean by the title of this message, The Seven-Fold Anointing”, we must first take a look at what verse 5 calls, the seven lamps of fire. What are these seven lamps of fire? Let us let the bible interpret itself. It tells us that they are the “seven spirits of God”.
Well then, what are the seven spirits of God? Are there seven different Gods? No! There is only one God. Is the Holy Spirit then made up of seven different entities? Once again, No! There is but one Holy Spirit. Are these then seven different titles of the Holy Spirit? No. For there are many, many more titles all throughout scripture given for the Holy Spirit, not just seven. So, what is the answer?
First of all, you must understand that the number seven is a symbolic number conveying the idea of completeness and perfection. The seven lamps of fire then, suggest the Spirit’s illuminating, purifying and energizing ministries. But still, the question is, what are these seven spirits of God? To understand that we must first take a look at Revelation 5: 5-6.
Revelation 5: 5-6, “And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.”
Now. Since we know that the Lamb here is Jesus, this lets us know more about these seven spirits of God. What did it say? It said the Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God! In other words, the seven spirits of God are contained within the Lamb! Do you know what this is talking about? It is talking about the Holy Spirit placing the fullness of His power upon Jesus! This should come as no surprise to us, given that all throughout scriptures it tells us over and over that Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit’s power.
Acts 10:38 says, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.”
John 3:34 says, “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.”
In other words, Jesus operated and still operates not in a partial measure, but rather in the full measure of the Holy Spirit! But guess what? So should you! Yes, you! Do you know why? Because you have the same anointing that Jesus had if you are Spirit-filled! The same anointing that rested upon Him during His ministry can now rest upon you.
1 John 2:20 says, “you have an unction from the Holy One”. The Jewish New Testament version of that same scripture says, “But you have received the Messiah’s anointing from HaKadosh”. That means the same anointing that was placed upon Jesus by the Holy Spirit, or His Hebrew name, HaKadosh, is now able to rest upon you. Why? Because there is only one HaKadosh or Holy Spirit. And the same anointing that came upon Jesus is the same anointing that can live and exist within us as Spirit–filled believers.
Now that we know all that, we need to know what kind of anointing rested upon Jesus. I am now going to show you the seven-fold anointing that rested upon Him. And that same seven-fold anointing is what God seeks for this end-time generation to move under.
Isaiah 11: 1-2 says, “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”
There is the seven-fold anointing of Jesus! And there is the seven-fold anointing that we should move under as well. Let’s look at each of them briefly:
-
The spirit of the Lord. (“ruach”: breath, wind, life)
-
The spirit of wisdom. (wise and skillful in the ways of God)
-
The spirit of understanding (combination of knowledge and wisdom)
-
The spirit of counsel. (advice, planning, purpose)
-
The spirit of might. (force, power, strength, victory)
-
The spirit of knowledge (cunning, wittingly aware)
-
The spirit of the fear of the Lord. (reverence)
This my friends is the seven-fold anointing that rested upon Jesus. And this is the very anointing that God seeks for His believers to operate in during these final hours before His coming. And not to only operate in them, but to operate in them as Jesus did. In the full measure of the Spirit!
